Hibi Lens Privacy Policy
Last updated: 2026-07-26
Overview
Hibi Lens ("the App") helps you learn Japanese by turning captured objects or selected photos into vocabulary cards. We collect and process as little data as possible. The App does not operate a backend server, does not show ads, does not use third-party analytics, and does not track you across apps or websites. Unless stated otherwise, your data stays on your device.
Data We Handle
- Camera and photo data: when you take a photo or choose an image, the image is processed on your device to create a study card. Images are not uploaded to our servers. If you save a card, the processed card image and thumbnail are stored locally in the App's private storage.
- Vocabulary card data: saved cards may include the captured date, local image paths, Japanese text, kana, kanji, romaji, English translation, Simplified Chinese translation, and study progress. This data is stored locally using Apple's on-device storage frameworks.
- Study progress: learned/mastered state and related dates are stored locally so the App can show your review and gallery progress.
- Local recognition data: object recognition, subject lifting, and vocabulary lookup are performed on device using Apple system frameworks and bundled app resources. Captured images are not sent to an external AI service by the App.
- Settings: appearance preferences and similar app settings are stored locally, including through UserDefaults where appropriate.
- Diagnostics: the App may create local debug or console logs for development and troubleshooting. Performance logging is disabled by default and is intended for opt-in debug use. These logs are not sent to us automatically.
Permissions
- Camera: used to capture objects and Japanese text for study. You can deny or revoke camera access in system settings.
- Photo library picker: used when you choose an existing image. The system photo picker provides the selected image to the App; the App does not scan your photo library.
- Motion/orientation: device orientation and motion information may be used during capture to keep saved card images oriented correctly. This information is not stored as a profile and is not sent to us.
Third-Party Services
- Apple system services: the App relies on Apple frameworks for camera access, photo picking, image processing, and local storage.
- Bundled learning resources: the App includes local vocabulary and recognition resources, including JMdict-derived vocabulary data and a bundled SigLIP model resource. These resources run locally inside the App.
- External links: source and license links may open websites outside the App. Those websites are governed by their own privacy policies.
Data Sharing
We do not sell your personal data. We do not share your captured images, saved vocabulary cards, study progress, or settings with advertisers, analytics providers, or our own servers.
Data Security
- Saved cards and images are stored in the App's local sandbox and protected by the security features of your device.
- If you enable device backups, such as iCloud backups, local app data may be included in those backups and protected by Apple according to your Apple account and device settings.
- No method of storage is perfectly secure, so you should avoid capturing or saving images that contain sensitive information you do not want stored on your device.
Your Choices
- Camera access: grant, deny, or revoke camera permission in iOS Settings.
- Photo selection: choose which images to provide through the system photo picker.
- Saved cards: delete cards in the App when deletion is available. Deleting a card removes its stored study record and associated local image files where supported by the App.
- Delete app data: uninstalling the App removes local app data from your device. If your device backups include App data, manage those backups through Apple settings.
Children's Privacy
The App is intended for general language-learning use and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy as the App changes. Significant changes will be reflected by updating this page and, where appropriate, in App Store release notes or in-app information.
